The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

A couple of nights ago, I had a dream that had a lot of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
going on--in fact, I hardly ever dream in black-and-white, and this dream was definitely old-school B&W, with lots of Chagall-inspired pointy, jabby angles, and a sonambulist who looks suspiciously like our contemporary Edward Scissorhands. At least I don't know German, so I can't say something really dorky like "I dreamt of Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari. In German." Brushing over the fact that with astonishing regularity I dream of Classical figures of Rome and Greece, Latin, French, and Euclidean geometry, as well as compose and play orchestral music--amazing!--I guess it shouldn't surprise me that I've added Appreciation of Film 101, Chapter Seven: German Expressionist Film to my roster of weird stuff I dream about.

I'm currently awaiting a REM version of Battleship Potemkin (1925). I mean, if we're going to allow German Expressionism a chance to mingle with my estivating gray matter, why not Soviet/Marxist propaganda? Sheesh.

I think we should get together and make a series of French new wave, Tarkovsky-esque, strange German, and Bergman-related features. All with startling eye make-up and overblown shadows. Hooray!
